Sermon for Sept. 1, 2013
But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
What a challenge this week’s gospel gives us! To invite the outcasts- the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind to dinner. Outcasts. Strangers. Into our very homes. To have a meal with us, in our house, our private space. What a radical message Jesus has for us this week!
What does it look like to invite the kingdom of God into your home? Who are those outcasts in our society today? How do we invite them?

Sermon for the 14th Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Kate Costa
I heard this week that we have a team of golfers who will be going to play in a benefit tournament for Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp. So, in their honor I have a golf joke for you this morning.
Our Father…
So begins the most well-known prayer on the planet. Many of us can recite it from memory. And yet, we often do so without thinking much about the prayer itself.
Martin Luther suggested we combat this tendency by praying it line by line, stopping at each phrase to consider how those particular words might apply for us in our own context.
For instance in the Small Catechism, Luther writes on the petition for daily bread:
What then does “daily bread” mean?
Everything included in the necessities and nourishment for our bodies, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, farm, fields, livestock, money, property, an upright spouse, upright children, upright members of the household, upright and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, decency, honor, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.
Readings for the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost:
Genesis 18:20-32 and Psalm 138 , Colossians 2:6-15, (16-19) , Luke 11:1-13

Upper Room Dedication May 26, 2013
The Upper Room was dedicated in memory of Mrs. Evelyn Estes, our longtime member and organist. The former reception office for the school, the room has been given new carpet, paint, furniture and curtains. It also has beautiful crown molding- a special feat of engineering by Les Davis due to its odd shape. It has a handsome solid wood cross created by David Brown, her son-in-law, on one wall and a print of Jesus at the crucifixion on the other. This room will be used for families to gather for special functions such as baptisms, weddings, funerals and for prayer throughout the year. We thank her daughters, Arline, Rae and Kyle, for the love they have poured into this room.
Pentecost Picnic May 19, 2013
The Youth Group, with the help of the parents, held a delicious picnic following the worship service. The pulled pork BBQ was donated by Shawn’s Smokehouse and the chicken was donated by The Culpeper Cattle Company. The free will offering collected will help pay expenses for Synod Assembly and other youth trips. Due to chilly weather we held our picnic in the Fellowship Hall and still were able to enjoy an indoor game of corn hole.
