Festival Day of St. Luke, the Evangelist

Happy St. Luke Day!  Today, October 18, is the commemoration of Luke, the Evangelist, for whom our congregation is named!Luke is known for being a faithful writer, physician, apostle and historian.  You can read more about this faithful servant at Wikipedia or here.

Almighty God, who inspired your servant Luke the physician to declare in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son: Graciously continue in your church the same love and power to heal, to the praise and glory of your Name; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
When have you seen a “Saint Luke” moment of love or healing in our church?  Take a few moments today to call another person in our church and share!

20th Sunday after Pentecost: Oct. 14, 2012

This Sunday we will hear,  “Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

This is a tough teaching, but one that invites us to lots of thought and conversation!  How do we live generously in our society today?

Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost: September 30, 2012

Where do we put up stumbling blocks in the path of others as they come to faith?  Where is God removing those very blocks from our path?

Join us for worship at 10am at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Culpeper, Virgnia.  Thanks be to God!

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost: September 23, 2012

This week we hear Jesus say, “Whoever wants to be first must be last and servant of all.”  What does it mean to worship a servant?  Who are you called to serve?

Join us for worship at 10am at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Culpeper, Virgnia.  Thanks be to God!

14th Sunday after Pentecost: September 2, 2012

Readings for this week:

O God, Wisdom of the universe,
you bear the pain of your people.
Grant us the gift of wisdom,
that we may discern your way
and live justly and graciously
amid the struggles of this world. Amen.

10th Sunday after Pentecost- Aug 5, 2012

This Sunday we will hear “Do not work for the food that perishes, but the food that endures forever which the son of man will give to you.”  What is that enduring food?  Where are the signs in your life that God is already giving it to you?

Readings for Sunday:

The Plumbline of God’s Justice- Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

This Sunday, we hear how Amos sees God’s justice as a plumb line- something that stays straight even when everything around it is crooked.

What does God’s justice look like for us in the 21st century, dozens of generations removed from Amos?
